How Does a USB Web key Work?

Although the USB Web key looks just like a USB flash drive that you might plug into your computer for storing or transporting files, the device performs a completely different function. Inserting a USB Web key into a free port on your computer automatically launches your Web browser on a pre-defined Web page.

Purpose

Some organizations use USB Web keys as free promotional items to publicize websites or a specific Web page. The Web keys are small and light, which makes them easy to mail out to customers or potential customers, or to give away at shows and exhibitions. An organization might mail out or give away a USB Web key as part of the launch of a new corporate website, or to promote a new microsite for a specific advertising, marketing or charity campaign.

Function

Each USB Webkey contains a small program file that activates when the user inserts the key into the computer’s USB port. The data file contains routing information for the Uniform Resource Locator address of the website that the device promotes. The device works in the same way that clicking a hyperlink in a word processing document or email message will automatically launch your Web browser and open the linked Web page. The Webkey can also include a data file with a website tracking script to provide statistics on the number of people who visit the website with the key.

 

Limitations

Although the USB Webkey closely resembles a USB flash drive, sometimes also known as a memory stick or pen drive, you won’t be able to use a promotional USB Webkey for storing files or moving content between computers. Unlike USB flash drives, Webkeys don’t include internal flash memory for reading and writing data. After you’ve plugged the device into your computer and viewed the linked Web page, the USB Webkey offers no further use.

 

Considerations

Only use USB Webkeys on your computer if you know and trust the organization that mailed you the device. Like any other removable storage device, computer media or email attachment, a USB Webkey could potentially harbor viruses or malicious software designed to compromise your computer system and steal your data or personal information. Most USB Webkeys come stamped with the organization’s corporate logo and a promotional letter. If in doubt, contact the organization’s customer support department before using the device.

How and why to use a Web key –

USB web keys are not to be confused with USB flash drives. They look exactly the same a standard USB drive, they have a regular USB connector and they’re available in all the same sizes and shapes as standard USB drives but with one key difference – they don’t have any on-board memory.

The lack of any memory means that you can’t save files to them and then carry these files around as you would with a regular flash drive.
